Red Road

The "Red Road" region is spectacular. The ocean is so beautiful and the drive along the coast on Red Road is stunning. The road itself is mostly not red anymore (it used to be) since it was repaved a few years ago, but I think the name will remain forever.

Just a short hop from where the volcano covered the town of Kalapana and the former black sand beach of Kaimu bay, there's a little community called Kaimu-Makena Houselots. These are small lots of 7-10 thousand square feet. County water is available there, which is a real plus.

Not to be confused (although it is) with Kaimu-Makena Houselots is Kaimu-Makena Homesteads. Homesteads is actually up closer to Black Sand Beach subdivision and away from the water a ways. They are larger parcels (5 to 8 acres) and often have nice ocean views. The only downside of Kaimu-Makena Homesteads is that, while they have deeded access to the highway, that road has never been built. The current road into Kaimu-Makena Homesteads passes over privately owned land and that landowner could someday prevent the owners of Kaimu-Makena Homesteads from using his land to access the highway.

That's Kehena Beach you see at the top of this page. Its our local "clothing optional" black sand beach. Its a really lovely place and when things go on the market in that area, they tend to sell quickly. There's some stunning homes right on the ocean and other with fantastic ocean views. The lots are smaller (7-9,000 square feet).

Right next to Kehena Beach is Puna Beach Palisades, which has 1/2 acre lots. The way the land is sloped in that area, most of the lots have good ocean views and the Kehena Beach is only a 10 minute walk away. A lot of B&Bs have opened in that subdivision and its a short distance to Kalani, which also increases its popularity.

Kalapana Seaview is the next subdivision up from Kehena. The lots are smaller (7-10,000 square feet) and not much is built in there so it looks sort of barren. The roads are all nicely done and this is probably going to become a popular area in the future.
